Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography)

Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) is one of the advanced screening services offered at Moffitt Cancer Center’s breast clinic. Compared to traditional, 2D mammography, tomosynthesis has an enhanced ability to detect breast cancers, including complex and invasive tumors. Additionally, fewer patients who have 3D mammography are called back for additional diagnostic imaging, making tomosynthesis a highly effective tool for the prompt detection of breast abnormalities.

At Moffitt, we offer three-dimensional mammograms for both screening and diagnostic purposes. When used as a screening tool, these scans are performed at the same time as a patient’s regularly scheduled mammogram. 

3D mammography services are available to any individual who is also a candidate for 2D mammography, and specifically recommended for:

  • Men and women who have a family history of breast cancer
  • Breast cancer survivors
  • Individuals with particularly dense breast tissue

With conventional mammography, certain areas of breast tissue can overlap on a flat image, potentially creating the illusion that healthy tissue is abnormal. However, with 3D mammography, Moffitt’s radiologists are able to review clearer and more precise images, and therefore can provide more confident assessments of a patient’s breast tissue. Additionally, because tomosynthesis produces digital images, the processes of copying, transferring and retrieving medical records are more efficient than those associated with traditional, film-based images.
