Advanced Radiation Oncology Fellowship

Currently recruiting for 2021-22

The Advanced Radiation Oncology Research Fellowship was established in 2016 to give trainees expertise in unique research opportunities available in the Moffitt Cancer Center Department of Radiation Oncology including the personalization of radiotherapy using genomic and radiomic signatures, novel combinations of radiation therapy and systemic therapy, and MRI-guided therapy among others. Specific research projects are flexible and can be conducted with mentorship from departmental faculty or faculty from across the institution.

Moffitt Cancer Center was a founding member of the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN) along with The Ohio State University. The partnership now involves 16 additional leading cancer centers. Through Moffitt’s Total Cancer Care (TCC) Database, all patient information, imaging, tumor samples, genetic information, treatment information, and outcomes are available to researchers in a central repository.

Departmental research is funded through multiple research grants from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Prostate Cancer Research Foundation as well as many other intramural and extramural agencies. The Department has 26 clinical trials accruing patients across all disease sites with numerous investigator-initiated trials funded through industry partnerships and internal/external grant agencies.

In addition to conducting research, trainees will spend three months on a clinical rotation with Department Chair, Dr. Louis Harrison, MD FASTRO. An awardee of the ASTRO Gold Medal, Dr. Harrison has written some of the primary textbooks in head and neck radiation oncology and brachytherapy. Dr. Harrison is a leading expert in the management of head and neck and skin cancers as well as sarcomas.

It is expected that during the year fellows will:

  • Publish manuscripts and present research findings at national conferences
  • Develop skills in clinical trial design
  • Attend lecture series, journal clubs, and grand rounds, across a broad range of malignancies

Moffitt Cancer Center is the only NCI- Designated Comprehensive Cancer based in Florida, a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), and is ranked number 11 on "America's Best Cancer Hospitals" in 2020 by U.S. News & World Report. The Department of Radiation Oncology includes 26 clinical radiation oncology faculty, 8 faculty physicists, a radiation oncology residency, radiation physics fellowship, and the department boasts one of the highest patient volumes in the country.
