Breast Pathology Fellowship
Program Description
The ACGME accredited Breast Pathology fellowship based at the Department of Anatomic Pathology, Moffitt Cancer Center (MCC) is a one-year fellowship designed to provide extensive exposure to diagnostic, prognostic and theranostic breast pathology as well as multidisciplinary management of breast disease. This fellowship is an opportunity to enhance the diagnostic and clinical correlative skills and competency of the fellow to be able to pursue a successful career in the academic, community hospital and private practice settings. The fellow will participate in intraoperative gross examinations of breast specimens, intraoperative evaluation of sentinel lymph nodes, sign-out of breast cases, and breast multidisciplinary tumor board. The fellow will actively participate in teaching pathology residents, surgical oncology fellows and visiting international physicians. The variety of breast cases seen at Moffitt Cancer Center includes not only malignant conditions but also a wide spectrum of benign, high risk and premalignant diseases which makes this fellowship a unique opportunity for pathologists interested in pursuing extensive training in breast pathology. In addition, the integration of the Pathology Fellow with the Breast Tumor Program is also a peculiarity of this fellowship that makes it very competitive. The fellow will have 4 weeks of clinical rotations through the breast medical oncology and radiation oncology clinics as well as surgical oncology including OR observership. The fellowship also includes rotations in the CLIA-certified Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory and tissue core.
Program Educational Goals and Objectives
Develop a systemic approach to the evaluation of benign and malignant lesions of the breast. Pathologists beginning their fellowship in Breast Pathology are expected to have learned basic morphological criteria for the diagnosis of the most common benign and malignant breast lesions. During fellowship, fellows will be expected to expand upon their knowledge and develop a greater competence in this field.
The Breast Pathology Fellowship program has been awarded accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The ACGME is a nonprofit organization that serves to evaluate, improve and publicly recognize graduate medical education programs and sponsoring institutions that are in substantial compliance with the standards of educational quality established by the organization.
Research
The fellow will have dedicated research time and will be required to be involved in departmental basic and translational research activities and contribute to publishing abstracts and peer-reviewed articles. The fellows are expected to complete at least one research project before the end of their fellowship year and to present this at a local or national meeting. Support for the research activity of the fellows is provided by the Moffitt Cancer Center GME office and the Research Coordinator. The fellow has one month of protected time for research. The time for research is not given in a one-month block, but rather at times that suit the needs of the research project being done.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold an M.D. degree (or foreign equivalent and must have USMLE step 1, 2 and 3 certifications), must have completed Anatomic Pathology or AP/CP residency and be board eligible or board certified in Anatomic or Anatomic/Clinical Pathology. Applicants must be eligible for a Florida State medical license. The selection process will involve review of letters of recommendation and a formal interview by faculty members of the Anatomic Pathology Department.
In cases of an exceptional candidate, two years of AP residency may suffice.
