Meet Bob- Pay It Forward
After Bob learned he had stage 3 bladder cancer, he stared out the window for three days in dismay. But he soon realized he couldn't fight this battle by feeling sorry for himself and focused on his treatment path at Moffitt. At Moffitt Cancer Center, the highly acclaimed multispecialty team of experts in our Genitourinary Oncology Program assess every patient on a case-by-case basis at a collaborative tumor board discussion.
Signs of Bladder Cancer
- Pain or a burning sensation during urination
- Frequent urination
- Feeling the need to urinate, but not being able to
While chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or intravesical therapy may be recommended to attempt to destroy cancer cells and shrink a tumor, most patients begin with surgery.
Highly Specialized Surgical Treatment Options at Moffitt
- Transurethral surgery (TUR)
- Segmental cystectomy
- Radical cystectomy with extended lymph node dissection
- Reconstructive surgery
Paying Hope Forward
After his treatment at Moffitt, Bob decided to give back. He now works as a patient advisor at Moffitt, helping others cope with their diagnoses and treatments with his first-hand knowledge of the experience.
"I thought I was just another victim, then Moffitt made me realize I was somebody's hope!"
He says that his objective in volunteering at Moffitt was simply an attempt to give back a portion of the blessings of hope they gave to him and his family.
Patients do not need physician referrals to come to Moffitt. To learn more about our approach to treating bladder cancer, call 1-888-MOFFITT or submit a new patient registration form online.
