Life After Cancer- Meet Gail
The Choice Was Clear
Gail wasn’t about to let a lung cancer diagnosis stop her from her life plans. She recalls that her very first thought was about her family. She didn’t want to leave; she wanted to enjoy her grand babies one day.
Signs of Lung Cancer:
- A chronic cough
- Hoarseness and/or wheezing
- Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
She was ready to overcome cancer. Her road would include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, genomic testing and clinical trials. Surrounded by an outstanding team, she made it through. Gail says it was the genomic testing that really set the bar in her treatment. The test revealed that she had a specific genetic mutation called ALK5, which could be treated through immunotherapy.
Life After Cancer
Gail gives credit to her physician and team including Dr. Eric Haura and the nurses who helped her stay positive and focused. Though the treatments were physically difficult, for her it was all about quality of life. She feels that Moffitt supported her in this,
“Moffitt always talks about quality of life. They don’t want you to just survive. They want you to have a great, happy life.”
Her life now includes chasing her 3-year-old granddaughter around the house, planting flowers in the garden and painting.
