Home Away From Home: For My Family

In 2008, Angela, then a 30-year-old mother of a baby girl, was diagnosed with leukemia after noticing unusual bruising. Her treatment plan quickly fell into place at Moffitt Cancer Center. Her initial thoughts after the diagnosis were, “OK, show me the way, show me what I need to do so that I can beat this, move past it and get on with our lives.” Moffitt made her path to wellness a successful journey for her and her family.

Moffitt a Home Away From Home

Angela’s treatment plan was aggressive and Moffitt did everything they could to help her and her family through the treatment. Originally from Chicago, they had only lived in Tampa a few months when they learned of Angela's diagnosis. Separated from her family due to intensive chemo, the nurses and team members treated Angela's husband and young daughter like family. Often alone due to her husband’s work schedule, Angela also found comfort in the team who took care of her. Everyone who worked with Angela knew her daughter and often stopped in to play with her, especially when Angela wasn’t feeling her best. Moffitt was truly a home away from home, Angela says. Not long into her chemo, Angela's little girl learned to walk at Moffitt- a milestone both Angela and her husband were proud of, as were the staff who took care of Angela.

She Has Become Stronger

A year later, Angela won her battle with cancer. Over time, she has become stronger. Angela began exercising and following a strict nutrition plan and is now a role model of success for other patients.

We are inspired by our patients. Discover more stories like Angela's on www.moffittcourage.org.
