Study Title

Breast Cancer Survivors Perceptions of Support During the Cancer Experiences: Comparisons between Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) and Heterosexual Control Group

Summary

The purpose of this study is to identify perceived barriers, available resources and support, and opportunities for improvement in breast cancer survivorship in both sexual minority and heterosexual breast cancer survivors.

Objective

Objectives: To conduct a short survey using the eight-item Modified Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey13 followed by focus groups discussions to identify perceived barriers, available resources and support, and opportunities for improvement in breast cancer survivorship in both sexual minority and heterosexual breast cancer survivors. Specific Aim 1a: To conduct qualitative inquiry to examine/explore perceived barriers, resources and support, and opportunities for Moffitt Cancer Center improvement in breast cancer survivorship in breast cancer survivors who self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (Group 1, Total n = 25) compared to heterosexual breast cancer survivors (Group 2, Total n = 25). To achieve this aim we will conduct a series of focus groups to explore these constructs. (Group 2, Total n = 25). Specific Aim 2: To identify specific demographics in each group and quantitative measure of Social Support with each group, using the eight-item Modified Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey13 and a general demographic form. To achieve this aim we will adminstered both forms prior to the focus group. Using basic descriptive statistics we will describe the outcomes of the group as a whole and compare the sexual minority group to the heterosexual group. Specific Aim 2: Facilitate improved understanding of Moffitt Cancer Center resources and support needs of sexual minority breast cancer survivors in an effort to reduce health disparities and improve breast cancer survivorship.
