Vulvar Cancer Surgery

Surgery is the primary form of treatment for vulvar cancer. At Moffitt Cancer Center’s gynecological clinic, surgeons practice the latest advancements in vulvar cancer surgery to remove cancer while preserving as much sexual and urinary function as possible.

Vulvar cancer surgery can take many forms depending on the specific location and extent of the cancer. The vulva isn’t one organ – it describes the external portion of the female genitalia that includes the inner and outer sections of the labia, clitoris, vaginal opening and Bartholin glands. Because of this, there are several different surgical procedures that might be used to treat vulvar cancer.

Types of vulvar cancer surgery

Many vulvar cancer treatment plans include a form of vulvectomy, or surgery to remove all or a section of the vulva. Types of vulvectomies include:

  • Partial simple vulvectomy – A portion of the vulva and surrounding top layers of tissue are removed.
  • Partial radical vulvectomy – A portion of the vulva and surrounding deep layers of tissue are removed.
  • Complete simple vulvectomy – The entire vulva is removed.
  • Complete radical vulvectomy – The entire vulva and surrounding tissues are removed.

In addition to removing all or a portion of the vulva, a surgeon may remove nearby lymph nodes if they are affected by cancer or to help prevent the spread of disease. Moffitt surgeons can also help women regain sexual and urinary function following cancer surgery.
