Triple negative breast cancer treatment that combines radiation therapy with breast-conserving surgery, such as a lumpectomy, can be very effective – sometimes even more so than a mastectomy performed without radiation therapy. This is encouraging for many patients because this aggressive form of breast cancer is estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor-negative and HER2-negative. In essence, this means that its treatment options are more limited than those for other types of breast cancer because it does not respond to hormone therapies. Nevertheless, surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are viable options for many patients. At Moffitt Cancer Center, we offer the latest advances in all types of cancer treatment, and our multispecialty team of experts collaboratively determines the best approach for each patient.

The renowned researchers at Moffitt are continually evaluating new delivery methods for radiation treatment. Some of the triple negative breast cancer radiation therapy options we currently offer include:

  • Standard treatment – Delivered over approximately six weeks using three-dimensional computerized radiation therapy (3D CRT) or intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • Intraoperative treatment – INTRABEAM® intraoperative radiotherapy is administered during lumpectomy surgery (in our local area, this treatment is available only at Moffitt)
  • Deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) – Can be utilized for left-sided breast cancer treatment to help protect a patient’s heart from the side effects of radiotherapy by accounting for the normal movement of the organs as the patient breathes

In addition to state-of-the-art equipment, the successful delivery of radiation therapy largely depends on the technical expertise of those who control the equipment. The highly skilled and experienced team of radiation oncologists at Moffitt truly sets our cancer center apart by delivering radiation therapy with an exceptional level of precision. Moffitt’s patients also benefit from convenience – that’s because we provide radiation treatment, chemotherapy, surgery and supportive care in a single location.
