Thyroid Radiation Treatment

Thyroid radiation therapy can be administered alone or in conjunction with other types of treatments, such as surgery and chemotherapy, as part of a comprehensive plan to address thyroid cancer. At Moffitt Cancer Center, each patient’s care is customized by a multispecialty team of cancer experts. This group of highly focused professionals includes board-certified surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists who work together to determine the most appropriate course of treatment for a patient, and then meet weekly to review the patient’s progress and refine the treatment approach as necessary.

At Moffitt, our patients have access to state-of-the-art radiation equipment in a single, convenient location. But, what truly sets us apart is the world-class skill of our radiation oncologists. These experts deliver thyroid radiation therapy with pinpoint precision, resulting in fewer treatment sessions, less discomfort and better outcomes for our patients.

Some of the thyroid radiation treatment options available at Moffitt include:

  • Radioactive iodine ablation treatment – This effective combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be recommended to treat papillary or follicular thyroid cancers. It works by finding and destroying cancer cells that remain after surgery or have spread beyond the thyroid.

  • External beam radiation therapy – A machine located outside a patient’s body generates high-energy X-rays that are targeted to destroy cancer cells in a specific area.

The treatment plan Moffitt recommends for a patient – whether it includes thyroid radiation or another option, such as a clinical trial – is determined based on the type and stage of the thyroid cancer, as well as the patient’s overall health and preferences. At Moffitt, we encourage patients to ask questions to learn about the goals of each option, the possible side effects, what to expect during treatment and the supportive care available to them. Oftentimes, thyroid cancer can be treated in several different ways, and we want our patients to feel comfortable with the options they choose.

Patients can receive thyroid radiation therapy for cancer treatment at Moffitt without a referral. To learn more, call 1-888-663-3488 or complete our online form to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced radiation oncologists.
