When Should I See a Skin Cancer Specialist?
If you have recently noticed an unusual mole or a change in the appearance or texture of your skin, a skin cancer specialist can help you determine what steps you need to take. He or she can perform a visual examination to determine if the lesion might be cancerous, then order any biopsies or imaging scans that might be necessary to confirm or rule out a skin cancer diagnosis.
Many times, moles and other lesions turn out to be noncancerous. However, as with other types of cancer, skin cancer is easiest to treat when it is detected in its earliest stages. As a result, it’s a good idea to promptly consult with a skin cancer specialist if you notice anything suspicious.
Signs that you should see a specialist

- A large or asymmetrical mole
- A mole that has an unusual color or “blotchy” appearance
- A mole that significantly changes in appearance over time
- A firm, rounded bump with visible blood vessels
- A flat spot or raised bump that itches or bleeds easily
- A small, pearl-like bump that has an indentation in the middle
