In order to obtain an accurate sarcoma diagnosis, it is important that you visit a high-volume cancer center like Moffitt Cancer Center. With more than 70 different types of sarcomas – each with their own pathologies – it can be difficult to determine the exact type of cancer that’s present without a full medical review by an expert. Typically, a diagnosis is determined through medical imaging, a review of the patient’s clinical history and firsthand expertise in sarcoma pathology. Once the diagnosis is made, the conversation can turn to potential treatment options, which vary largely depending on the sarcoma, the patient’s overall health and other factors.

With sarcoma, there is no screening process, and often this type of cancer, which affects the connective tissues in the body, does not cause symptoms – particularly in the early stages. Or, if it does cause discomfort, as with osteosarcoma in bone tissue, the symptoms are often relatively mild at first and easily discounted for other medical issues. As a result, a diagnosis usually only happens when a soft lump has developed somewhere in the body or a tumor is discovered during another medical procedure.

At Moffitt Cancer Center, our Sarcoma Program offers a variety of different treatment options that you won’t find elsewhere in the region. We have been named a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, which recognizes our leadership in cancer research and our commitment to ongoing clinical trials.
