Prostate cancer surgery is available to St. Petersburg, Florida, residents at Moffitt Cancer Center. As a high-volume cancer center, Moffitt has a high level of experience treating all stages of prostate cancer. In our Urologic Oncology Program, a multispecialty team of experts reviews every new patient’s case to collectively decide on an individualized treatment plan, providing each patient with the best chance at a favorable outcome and a better quality of life.
In the event that our experts recommend prostate cancer surgery, a patient’s surgical plan may include any of the following options:
- Radio-frequency ablation (RFA) – A needle electrode is guided into the patient’s tumor with the help of an imaging technique such as an MRI or ultrasound. High-frequency electrical currents then pass through the electrode, destroying cancer cells.
- Radical retropubic prostatectomy – The patient’s prostate gland is removed through an incision in the abdomen.
- Robotic radical prostatectomy – Cancerous parts of the patient’s prostate gland and nearby lymph nodes are removed.
- Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy – A series of abdominal incisions gives the surgeon access to the patient’s tumor. Then, a thin tube with a camera attached to the end provides the necessary visibility to remove the patient’s prostate gland and lymph nodes.
