To determine if a patient has prostate cancer, a prostate biopsy is often required. Many patients from the Orlando, Florida, area travel to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa to work with our experienced diagnostic team. Our highly experienced, fellowship-trained surgeons have diagnosed and treated numerous prostate cancer patients through the use of a variety of therapies and advanced surgical techniques. At every step of a patient’s cancer journey, we provide attentive, comprehensive treatment, always focused on achieving the best possible outcome and improved quality of life. We can even provide hotel information for traveling patients who need to stay in an environment that meets our strict infection control and hygiene standards, in order to ease lodging concerns and alleviate some of the stresses that can sometimes accompany travel and being away from home.

Moffitt’s surgeons perform several different types of biopsy procedures, including what is sometimes referred to as a “saturation biopsy” – a procedure in which a high volume of tissue samples are collected at one time for a pathologist to examine under a microscope. The most appropriate biopsy procedure for a patient is determined by a collaborative tumor board, which is comprised of expert specialists, including:

  • Surgeons
  • Medical oncologists
  • Radiation oncologists
  • Anesthesiologists
  • Nurses
  • Lab personnel
  • Supportive care workers

This multispecialty team will not only determine the best diagnostic procedures, but also will recommend a highly individualized treatment plan and monitor the patient closely if a diagnosis of prostate cancer is confirmed. The team may also make adjustments to a patient’s treatment along the way. This approach ensures that a patient has access to multiple expert opinions without referrals.

At Moffitt, we know that traveling for a cancer diagnosis or treatment can be a stressful part of the process, which is why we have partnered with a number of area hotels, all of which meet or exceed our strict infection control and hygiene standards. These providers offer discounted rates for our patients, which can help ease the financial burdens that often accompany an illness.
