Pancreas Interception Center Focuses on High-Risk Individuals

Moffitt Cancer Center is introducing a first-of-its-kind clinic that is entirely focused on individuals who are at an increased risk for pancreatic cancer.

Unlike colon and breast cancers, there are no population-based guidelines for the screening of individuals at the highest risk for pancreatic cancer, leading to detection at later stages of the disease. Patients who would benefit from the Pancreas Interception Center (PIC) and are at greater risk for developing pancreatic cancer than the general population include: 

• Family history
• Genetic predisposition
• Chronic pancreatitis
• Tobacco/alcohol
• Pancreatic cysts
• Insulin resistance
• Overgrowth of certain gut bacteria (microbiome)
• Toxin exposure

The Pancreas Interception Center at Moffitt Cancer Center, co-directed by Dr. Shaffer Mok and Dr. Jason Denbo, is a novel concept designed to educate, identify and alter the course of care for individuals who are at increased risk for pancreatic cancer. Individuals will be greeted by a patient-centered concierge who will assist in the coordination of appointments and navigation throughout the comprehensive evaluation process.

Using a combination of advanced diagnostic testing and multi-disciplinary counseling, the focus is on risk stratification, patient education, algorithmic surveillance and engagement in clinical trials and studies devoted toward mitigating the risk of pancreatic cancer.
