Types of pancreatic cancer surgery offered at Moffitt

Based on your unique case, overall health and individual preferences, the multispecialty treatment team in our pancreatic cancer program may recommend one of the following types of surgery:

  • Total pancreatectomy – A surgeon removes the pancreas, bile duct, spleen, gall bladder and affected portions of the stomach and small intestine.
  • Whipple procedure – A surgeon removes the head, and often the body, of the pancreas, as well as any nearby tissues that are affected by cancer. This may include the bile duct, gallbladder, duodenum, stomach and small intestine. The remaining portion of the pancreas and bile duct is then reattached to the small intestine to allow food, digestive enzymes and bile to move through the digestive tract.
  • Distal pancreatectomy – A surgeon removes the tail and possibly part of the body of the pancreas. During this procedure, the head of the pancreas is left intact.
  • Minimally invasive surgery – A surgeon performs laparoscopic pancreatic cancer surgery by making small incisions in the stomach and using tiny, telescope-guided surgical tools to remove a tumor and surrounding tissue.
