I have oral cancer. What are my treatment options?
Oral cancer patients at Moffitt have access to the latest advances in treatment. Each patient’s treatment plan will vary according to the location and makeup of his or her cancer, but many plans include a combination of:
- Therapeutic surgery with muscle-sparing techniques to remove cancerous growths while preserving as much healthy tissue and function as possible.
- Skull base surgery, if necessary, to resect tumors in the skull base area using image-guided techniques. Endoscopic sinus surgery may also be performed based on the specific location of the tumor.
- One or more forms of targeted radiation therapy, including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), brachytherapy and external beam therapy, to shrink tumors and destroy cancer cells.
Oral cancer treatment at Moffitt does not end once cancer is addressed. Our patients benefit from the expertise of reconstructive surgeons and maxillofacial prosthodontists, who help restore the natural appearance of the face with advanced procedures and prosthetic devices following cancer treatment. Moffitt’s oral cancer program also includes professionals in speech and swallowing rehabilitation who work with patients to help them return to a normal, enjoyable life.
Additionally, Moffitt’s partner hotels offer reduced rates to patients and their families who are traveling from Miami and other cites to receive treatment. These hotels meet or exceed our stringent hygiene standards and are located near our cancer center.
