Radiation therapy for melanoma is one of several treatment options available at Moffitt Cancer Center. Moffitt is an American College of Radiology-accredited center, a designation that means we not only have the finest equipment, but also qualified and highly skilled staff. Our Radiation Oncology Program is home to a renowned team of professionals specializing in the use of radiation treatment, many of whom have focused their expertise specifically on melanoma and other skin cancers.

While Moffitt boasts state-of-the-art equipment for delivering targeted radiation therapy, we believe that the effectiveness of the treatment lies in the hands of those individuals who provide it. That’s why our multispecialty team includes experts in all facets of the radiation therapy process – from our radiation oncologists who plan the patient’s treatment schedule, to dosimetrists who program and test each individual’s required dosage, and radiation therapists who have the skill and certifications to operate our advanced machines. Typically, for melanoma, radiation therapy is not the primary treatment method. In most cases, a biopsy or other surgical procedure is the first approach taken.

Every individual is different, however, which is why our team looks at each patient on a case-by-case basis and comes up with a treatment plan that’s tailored specifically for his or her needs. Radiation therapy may be a part of a patient’s recommended plan and may be given before, after, in conjunction with or instead of other forms of treatment for a variety of reasons.

For instance, Moffitt’s radiation oncologists may suggest radiation therapy for melanoma in order to:

  • Address cancer that can’t be removed by surgical means
  • Target an area where lymph nodes were removed to reduce the chances of recurrence
  • Relieve pain or other symptoms associated with metastasis, which is cancer that has spread

Of course, these are just some examples. Depending on the situation, different forms of radiation therapy may be used. Moffitt’s radiation oncologists are experts in a wide range of radiation delivery methods. Some techniques that may be used when treating patients with melanoma include three-dimensional computerized radiation therapy (3D CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT).
