Chest surgery is often an important part of lung cancer treatment. Following a cancer diagnosis, it’s understandable that some people may feel vulnerable and frightened when faced with a decision of this magnitude. To help ensure that you receive the best treatment for your needs – whether that includes chest surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or another option – you are encouraged to place your trust in the Thoracic Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center. According to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals for Cancer listing, we rank among the best cancer hospitals in the nation, and our campus near St. Petersburg, FL, is home to some of the best and most experienced thoracic surgeons in the nation.
At Moffitt, we take a multispecialty approach to cancer treatment. This means that each patient’s case is analyzed by a tumor board of experts, each of whom provides input into the development of the patient’s treatment plan. As part of this process, Moffitt’s surgeons will evaluate the patient’s lungs and identify tumors that can be removed through chest surgery.
There are several different procedures that a surgeon can use to remove cancerous lung tissue. For instance, the four types of chest surgery that are commonly used for lung cancer treatment are:
- Wedge resection – The removal of a tumor along with a margin of surrounding healthy lung tissue or a few lymph nodes
- Segmentectomy – The removal of a section of a lung and some surrounding lung tissue and lymph nodes
- Lobectomy – The removal of one lobe of a lung
- Pneumonectomy – The removal of all lobes of a lung
Because Moffitt is a high-volume cancer center, our surgeons are skilled and experienced in performing advanced lung surgery techniques, such as minimally invasive and robot-assisted procedures, as well as highly complex surgeries. As our research team continues to explore and develop new lung cancer treatment options and novel approaches for chest surgery, more tumors (including many that were considered inoperable as recently as a few years ago) are becoming eligible for surgical removal.
Moffitt Cancer Center makes chest surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, supportive care services and clinical trials available to our patients in a single, convenient location. In most cases, we can eliminate the need for our patients to travel to multiple clinics throughout the St. Petersburg, Florida, area and beyond to receive the tests, treatments and answers they need.
