Doctor utilizing robotic-assistance surgery

Surgery is the primary form of treatment for kidney (renal cell) cancer. Robotic-assisted technology can sometimes be used during a nephrectomy, a surgery that removes the affected kidney or a cancerous portion of the kidney (partial or kidney-sparing nephrectomy). In other cases, robotic technology is utilized when removing the affected kidney along with its ureter in a procedure called a nephroureterectomy.

What does robotic kidney cancer surgery involve?

Standard open surgery for kidney cancer requires a large incision in the abdominal area. Comparatively, robotic surgery involves a few keyhole-sized incisions that are strategically created to insert thin surgical instruments and a tiny camera. With the assistance of robotic technology, the surgeon is able to perform precise, delicate movements that are not possible with the human hand alone.

Robotic kidney cancer surgery offers several advantages over open surgery, including:

  • Smaller incisions and less noticeable scarring
  • A shorter hospital stay and recovery period
  • Less postoperative discomfort
  • A lower risk of surgical complications, such as injury to the bowels
  • A more rapid return to normal activities

It’s important to note that robotic kidney cancer surgery is not appropriate for every patient, as more complex or invasive kidney masses may require a larger incision to remove.

Our approach to robotic kidney cancer surgery

In collaboration with the Moffitt Institute for Robotic Cancer Surgery, our Urologic Oncology Program offers patients a complete spectrum of advanced kidney cancer treatments. Robotic surgery at our cancer center is facilitated by the popular da Vinci® Surgical System, which is operated by skilled surgeons who have an unmatched level of experience performing complex cancer procedures.
