Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy for Kidney Cancer
A laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can be used to remove a small renal tumor through tiny incisions while preserving the healthy remainder of the kidney. This approach may be suitable for a patient who is diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, particularly if the tumors are localized and measure approximately 4 centimeters or less in diameter. To address larger renal cell carcinomas, a radical nephrectomy (the removal of an entire kidney) is usually recommended.
As compared to an open partial nephrectomy, a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy can often provide equally effective results with:
- A shorter hospital stay
- Less post-operative discomfort
- An earlier return to activity
- A more favorable cosmetic outcome
- A lower risk of complications, such as kidney failure
In the Genitourinary Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center, our surgeons are experienced in performing laparoscopic partial nephrectomy surgery and other procedures to treat kidney cancer. To ensure the best possible outcome and quality of life for each patient, our multispecialty tumor board collaboratively develops individualized treatment plans by taking into account the size and stage of a tumor, a patient’s previous treatment history and other unique factors before recommending a specific approach.
In addition to refined surgical expertise, Moffitt offers patients access to newly discovered treatments through our clinical trials program. For instance, our nationally acclaimed researchers are continually studying promising new surgical techniques, and we are currently evaluating the use of tissue extracted from a surgically removed kidney tumor for targeting residual cancer cells.
