Radiation therapy for kidney cancer involves the use of high-energy X-rays or other forms of radiation to destroy cancer cells or slow their growth. This treatment method can also be effective for alleviating pain and other symptoms that can arise when kidney cancer spreads, especially if it has metastasized to the bones or brain.

Moffitt Cancer Center's Radiation Oncology Program not only has the most advanced equipment in use, but also has highly specialized radiation oncologists who have an in-depth understanding of the intricacies of kidney cancer. These experts participate in a collaborative tumor board, which meets weekly to determine, among other things, the appropriateness of using radiation therapy in each patient’s treatment plan. The tumor board may recommend that radiation treatment be used alone or in conjunction with other therapies for the best outcomes and quality of life.

The radiation oncologists at Moffitt administer radiation therapy for kidney cancer through two different delivery methods:

  • External radiation therapy is delivered using a machine located outside of a patient’s body. The machine directs the radiation toward the kidney and, if necessary, the surrounding tissues.
  • Internal radiation therapy (brachytherapy) delivers the radiation directly into the affected area with the use of needles, catheters, seeds or wires.

Radiation therapy can sometimes have side effects, but these side effects often disappear after a short time. If a patient experiences side effects, our team of dieticians, pain management specialists, counselors and other supportive staff can help develop strategies to address them.
