Surgery is a common treatment option for kidney cancer patients. Many patients from Clearwater, Florida, seek treatment for kidney cancer at Moffitt Cancer Center due to the high level of experience from our surgeons. Thousands of patients have benefited from the innovative techniques and procedures our surgeons use to improve outcomes and quality of life.
In our Urologic Oncology Program, a team of specialists meets regularly as a tumor board and collaborates to discuss each new patient’s case. Together, this multispecialty team develops an individualized treatment plan that takes into account the size, stage and location of the tumor, as well as the patient’s overall health. In some cases, one of the following types of kidney cancer surgery may be recommended as part of the treatment plan:
- Partial nephrectomy – This procedure removes a portion of the kidney. It can be performed as an open procedure, in which a standard incision is made in the abdominal wall, or as a laparoscopic (minimally invasive) procedure, in which a series of tiny incisions are made in the abdominal wall.
- Radical nephrectomy – This kidney cancer surgery removes the entire kidney, as well as some surrounding tissue, if necessary. As with a partial nephrectomy, a radical nephrectomy can also be performed either as an open procedure or laparoscopically.
- Arterial embolization – This procedure involves injecting particles into an artery that feeds the tumor. These particles block the artery, which helps slow tumor growth and reduce symptoms.
