Hodgkin lymphoma is relatively uncommon, and there are currently no screening tests available to detect the condition in individuals who are not showing any signs of cancer. At present, the most effective approach is for individuals to know their own risk factors and to promptly consult with a physician if any potential symptoms develop.

The most prevalent signs of Hodgkin lymphoma include swollen lymph nodes, persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss and night sweats. However, these symptoms can also indicate other conditions that are more common and less serious, which means that several diagnostic tests are usually necessary to pinpoint their exact cause. However, in the event that Hodgkin lymphoma is the cause, the earlier the condition is diagnosed, the better a patient’s outcome and quality of life are likely to be.

While Hodgkin lymphoma screening is not performed regularly for people without symptoms, a physician may recommend any of the following diagnostic tests to an individual who is experiencing possible symptoms:

  • Blood tests
  • Imaging tests
  • A lymph node biopsy
  • A bone marrow biopsy

Individuals who have been diagnosed with and previously treated for Hodgkin lymphoma may be scheduled for any of these tests on a routine basis to monitor for recurrence. While this is not officially considered a form of screening, as a history of lymphoma calls for regular monitoring, it can significantly increase the likelihood of early detection.
