Metastatic Squamous Neck Cancer Treatment Provided by Moffitt Cancer Center’s Multispecialty Team
Metastatic squamous neck cancer is a squamous cell cancer that originates in another part of the body, such as a lung or kidney, then spreads to lymph nodes in the neck. In many cases, the multispecialty team in the Head and Neck Program at Moffitt Cancer Center can determine where the cells developed (and, as a result, what kind of cancer is present) based on the results of a microscopic examination of the cells. However, there are some instances in which the primary cancer type cannot be identified, in which case the condition is known as metastatic squamous cell cancer with an occult primary tumor.
When the primary cancer type is known, treatment can be tailored accordingly. For instance, lung cancer that has spread to lymph nodes in the neck is usually treated with the same chemotherapy drugs as lung cancer that is confined to the lungs. However, if the primary tumor type cannot be determined, oncologists may need to take a more generalized approach to metastatic squamous cell cancer treatment.
