Hypopharyngeal Cancer Treatment Provided by Head and Neck Cancer Specialists
Hypopharyngeal cancer develops in the hypopharynx, which consists of the lower part of the throat and the top portion of the esophagus. Most of these tumors develop in the cells that line the hypopharynx, but some also develop in the salivary glands, connective tissues or mucus-producing surfaces of the throat.
Typically, hypopharyngeal cancer progresses slowly over time. The cells in the hypopharynx can develop genetic abnormalities that cause them to reproduce very rapidly and eventually accumulate into tumors. However, some precancerous abnormalities ultimately resolve on their own. This condition is known as dysplasia.
Oncologists can recommend several types of hypopharyngeal cancer treatment to help improve a person’s prognosis and quality of life. It’s best to seek treatment from a team of head and neck cancer specialists, as these medical professionals can make the most tailored recommendations.
Comprehensive treatment for hypopharyngeal cancer
At Moffitt Cancer Center, we take a patient-centric approach to hypopharyngeal cancer treatment. Because no two cases are exactly the same, we create each patient’s treatment plan to address his or her unique needs. For instance, patients with hypopharyngeal dysplasia may undergo a minor procedure to remove abnormal cells, while patients with cancers that have spread to the voice box, lymph nodes or other surrounding tissues may receive a combination of therapies for maximum effectiveness.
Moffitt’s head and neck cancer specialists provide a comprehensive range of therapies, including:
- Traditional and minimally invasive surgery
- Surgery performed through the throat, eliminating the need for an incision
- Targeted and biological therapies
- Radiation therapy
- Supportive care services, such as speech therapy and parenteral nutrition
As a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Moffitt conducts a number of clinical trials for head and neck cancer, helping patients access new treatments that aren’t yet available in other settings. For this reason and others, we’re a leading destination for hypopharyngeal cancer treatment.
