If you’ve been diagnosed with gallbladder cancer, your treatment plan may include surgery. If so, consider working with the renowned team of surgical oncologists at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. The surgeons in our Gastrointestinal Oncology Program are skilled and experienced in performing the latest surgical techniques, including robot-assisted cholecystectomies, as well as traditional and non-robotic minimally invasive gallbladder procedures.
Surgical options for treating gallbladder cancer
Surgery is often recommended for addressing early-stage gallbladder cancer. Some options include:
- A cholecystectomy – If the cancer is confined to the gallbladder, a surgeon may remove the entire organ.
- An extended cholecystectomy – If the cancer has spread to the area immediately beyond the gallbladder, a surgeon may remove the entire gallbladder as well as a portion of the liver, bile ducts and some nearby lymph nodes.
Recent studies suggest that the risk of gallbladder cancer recurrence can be reduced with additional treatment following a successful surgery. For this reason, an oncologist may recommend chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combined approach after surgical treatment.
Because gallbladder cancer surgery cannot address cancerous cells that have spread to distant areas of the body, late-stage gallbladder cancer may be addressed with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or new treatments available through clinical trials.
Surgical options for addressing cancer-related bile duct blockages
Advanced gallbladder cancer can sometimes create bile duct blockages, which can lead to jaundice, infection and other serious complications if left untreated. Some surgical options for addressing blocked bile ducts include:
- A bile duct stent procedure – A surgeon may place a straw-like plastic or metal tube (stent) in a blocked bile duct to hold the duct open and help bile drain properly.
- A biliary bypass procedure – A surgeon may reroute a bile duct around a blocked area to reinstate the flow of bile.
