Types of surgery for uterine cancer
If uterine cancer surgery is deemed to be the most appropriate course of treatment for a patient’s cancer, she may undergo one of the following procedures:
- Hysterectomy – The patient’s uterus and cervix are removed.
- Radical hysterectomy – The uterus, cervix, ovaries, upper portion of the vagina and any necessary surrounding tissues are removed.
- Total hysterectomy with a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy – The uterus, cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes are removed.
- Pelvic exenteration or evisceration – All of the organs from the patient’s pelvic cavity, including the vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, bladder and rectum, are removed, as well as the surrounding lymph nodes. Then, the surgeon uses tissues from other parts of the patient’s body to reconstruct the vagina, and constructs a permanent colostomy and urinary diversion.
Even if a patient’s uterine cancer surgery is successful in removing all visible cancer, additional treatment may be recommended to destroy any cancer cells that might remain. These treatments may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy or a treatment available through Moffitt’s clinical trials program. We have been named a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, and our robust clinical trials program often allows our patients in Tampa, FL, to benefit from the latest advancements in uterine cancer treatment before they are made available in other locations.
