Partial Colectomy for Colorectal Cancer
A partial colectomy is a surgical procedure for colon cancer in which a cancerous part of the colon is removed. Depending on the extent of the cancer, this surgery can sometimes be curative. Even if the surgery is projected to have a positive outcome, however, additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy may also be recommended to destroy any residual cancer cells and reduce the patient’s chance of experiencing a recurrence.
Depending on the location, size and stage of a patient’s tumor, a surgeon may take one of two different approaches to performing the partial colectomy:
- Using a traditional approach, the surgeon will remove the cancerous tissue through a standard incision in the patient’s abdomen. This type of surgery is performed with traditional handheld surgical instruments.
- Using a minimally invasive (endoscopic) approach, the surgeon will remove cancerous tissue through a series of small incisions in the patient’s abdomen. This type of surgery is performed with the assistance of a tiny video camera and a set of small surgical tools.
No matter which approach a surgeon uses, the partial colectomy procedure is the same. The surgeon will remove the cancerous part of the colon along with some local lymph nodes, then reconnect the remaining sections of the colon to allow for normal digestion. Usually, after a partial colectomy, patients are able to use the restroom normally once they have fully recovered from the surgery.
