Robotic Surgery for Colorectal Cancer Treatment

Robotic surgery is a novel colorectal cancer treatment offered at Moffitt Cancer Center. Advanced technologies are used to streamline and enhance the surgical process, leading to greater precision and numerous quality of life enhancements for our patients.

When performing robotic surgery, a surgical oncologist can precisely maneuver the surgical instruments used to remove a tumor. These tools can bend and rotate as needed without losing stability, and a 3D visualization system gives the surgeon a better view of the tumor.

At Moffitt, our surgeons use the da Vinci® Surgical System to perform several operations, including:

• Low anterior resections
• Abdominoperineal resections
• Partial colectomies
• Full colectomies (subtotal or total)

Like other minimally invasive procedures, robotic surgery involves the use of several small incisions rather than one large incision. This can reduce the amount of scarring and blood loss associated with the procedure and can lead to a shorter recovery time as well. Several studies have also found that patients who had a colectomy performed with the da Vinci Surgical System experienced a quicker return of bowel function than patients who underwent traditional colorectal surgery. Similarly, patients who underwent a da Vinci rectal resection had less healthy tissue removed during the procedure and were quicker to return to a soft diet.
