Robotic Surgery for the Treatment of Colon Cancer

Robotic surgery

Robotic surgery is one of the latest advances in colon cancer treatment. At Moffitt Cancer Center, we are committed to providing our patients with access to the most effective treatments, including minimally invasive, robot-assisted surgery. Our colorectal surgeons often use the da Vinci® Surgical System, which combines a high-definition, 3D vision system with wristed instruments that can bend and rotate farther than the human hand. Our surgeons use these technologies to improve each patient’s outcome and quality of life.

When comparing conventional (open) colon resections and those completed with the assistance of the da Vinci robotic surgery system, several studies have found that da Vinci colectomies are associated with:

  • Less pain
  • A shorter hospital stay
  • A lower rate of complications, such as infection
  • A quicker return to normal bowel function after surgery
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring and better cosmetic outcomes

Studies have also found that minimally invasive colectomies performed with the da Vinci Surgery System can provide further benefits, such as enhanced surgical precision and control. With that said, a treatment plan that’s right for one person may not be ideal for another. Moffitt’s experienced oncologists evaluate each patient on an individual basis to help ensure that they are making the most appropriate recommendations.

Robotic surgery is just one of the many colon cancer treatments that we offer. Moffitt’s colon cancer surgeons perform several other procedures using a variety of innovative techniques. Nonsurgical treatments are also administered in the same location. Our surgeons work collaboratively with our medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and supportive care providers who also specialize in colorectal cancer.
