Laser Surgery for Cervical Cancer
Laser surgery, sometimes called laser ablation, is a treatment that may be used to address cervical cancer. Most often performed for women with early stages of cervical cancer, laser surgery involves using a focused laser beam to create heat. The laser beam is directed through the vagina and burns off abnormal cells from the surface of the cervix. Before the procedure begins, the patient is given a numbing medication (local anesthesia) to numb the cervix. During the procedure, which is performed on an outpatient basis in a doctor’s office or clinic, patients may experience mild discomfort similar to menstrual period cramps. Most women only need one treatment session to remove all abnormal cells.
What are the side effects of laser therapy for cervical cancer?
As with most procedures, patients can expect some side effects following laser surgery for cervical cancer treatment. However, these side effects are usually minimal and typically subside within a couple of days. Common side effects of laser therapy for cervical cancer include:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Watery discharge
- A small amount of pain
- Cramps similar to those experienced with a menstrual period
- Fatigue
