Oophorectomy Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy in Treating Cervical Cancer
If you have cervical cancer that has spread to your ovaries and fallopian tubes, a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy may be recommended as a potential form of treatment. During this procedure, a surgical oncologist will remove both of your ovaries and fallopian tubes. The procedure is similar to, but more extensive than, a unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, in which one ovary and fallopian tube are removed.
A bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy can be performed as a traditional surgery or minimally invasive procedure. Your surgeon will determine which approach is most appropriate for your needs.
What to expect after a salpingo-oophorectomy
Because both of your ovaries and fallopian tubes will be removed during a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, you won’t be able to become pregnant afterward. However, if you are a candidate for a unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, you may still be able to become pregnant (because one of your ovaries and one of your fallopian tubes will remain intact).
A bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy may cause you to enter menopause, regardless of your age. It’s normal to experience hormonal side effects such as:
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
- Mood swings
- An increased risk of osteoporosis due to decreased estrogen and progesterone production
To help counteract some of these side effects, you may be prescribed hormone replacement medications immediately after your surgery. Supplemental estrogen or progestin can help you manage these complications as part of a comprehensive supportive care program.
