Abnormal Pap Smear Follow-Up Testing Near St. Petersburg, FL

An abnormal Pap smear result means that abnormal cells – but not necessarily cancerous ones – were detected in a patient’s cervix. Often, these abnormalities are the result of a minor infection, HPV or ordinary inflammation, but follow-up testing is still important to determine the precise underlying cause. At Moffitt Cancer Center, we welcome patients from St. Petersburg, Florida, and other nearby areas to consult with our gynecologic oncologists following an abnormal Pap smear. Our team performs a wide range of diagnostic tests, including cone biopsies and LEEP procedures, to comprehensively examine abnormal cells, then uses each patient’s test results to provide individualized screening and treatment recommendations.

For patients who have recently received abnormal Pap smear results, Moffitt’s gynecologic oncologists may recommend:

  • A colposcopy, or visual examination of the cervix
  • A cone biopsy or loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) to retrieve abnormal cells for laboratory testing
  • A repeat Pap smear

Moffitt’s team may also recommend that women who have received abnormal Pap test results consider more frequent cervical cancer screenings. Even if no cancerous or pre-cancerous cells are detected, there are certain conditions that can trigger abnormal test results that require careful monitoring. HPV, for instance, is one of the leading causes of cellular abnormalities and is also a known risk factor for cervical cancer. Women who have HPV may benefit from more frequent screenings to detect cancerous changes as soon as possible, should they occur. Patients from St Petersburg often choose to make the trip to Moffitt for follow-up screenings as a result of our state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies and multispecialty treatment team.
