Abnormal Pap Smear Follow-Up Testing Near Clearwater, FL
If the results of a recent Pap smear have come back abnormal, your physician has likely recommended that you have one or more follow-up tests, depending on the specific results that you received. At Moffitt Cancer Center near Clearwater, Florida, we perform a variety of testing services in a single location, helping patients pinpoint the cause of the abnormal test results and determine what the outcome means for both their short-term and their long-term health.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap smear is not indicative of cancer. A more common cause is HPV, or human papillomavirus. HPV is a widely known risk factor for cervical cancer. Women who are diagnosed with HPV may require more frequent cervical cancer screenings than women who do not have the condition. As such, if follow-up testing reveals HPV as the cause of a patient’s abnormal test results, Moffitt’s team can provide her with an individualized screening plan that can increase the likelihood of detecting cancerous or pre-cancerous changes as soon as they occur.
And, should a patient’s abnormal Pap smear indicate the presence of cancerous or pre-cancerous cells in the cervix, Moffitt’s highly experienced gynecologic oncologists can promptly develop a treatment plan for addressing the issue as thoroughly as possible. To guide these treatment decisions, we may perform additional tests such as:
- A colposcopy, or visual examination of the cervix
- A cone biopsy to remove abnormal tissues and examine the cells for the presence of cancer
- A loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) to remove atypical cells using electrical current (this is typically performed as an alternative to a cone biopsy)
Because we have a team of medical professionals who exclusively diagnose and treat gynecologic cancers, as well as state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies and treatments, many patients from Clearwater and other surrounding areas turn to Moffitt for guidance after receiving an abnormal Pap smear. Whether their diagnosis is common or highly complex, we’re able to provide the comprehensive, multispecialty treatment that they deserve.
