An abnormal Pap smear result isn’t necessarily indicative of cancer, but should still be evaluated by an experienced medical professional. At Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, we provide women with comprehensive diagnostic services and second opinion consultations, as well as cervical cancer screenings and education about the importance of early detection.
To determine the cause of a patient’s abnormal Pap smear, our gynecologic oncologists can perform:
- A secondary Pap smear
- A colposcopy (an examination of the cervix)
- A biopsy (the removal of abnormal cervical tissues)
These tests are crucial because they can help determine how likely abnormal cells are to develop into cancerous ones. For instance, if a patient’s abnormal Pap smear is the result of an HPV infection, the patient may have an elevated risk of developing cervical cancer in the future, and more frequent screenings may be necessary. These tests can also determine whether cancerous or pre-cancerous cells are present, and if so, what treatments are best to recommend.
