With Moffitt near you – just a short drive north from St. Petersburg, FL – there’s no reason to put off scheduling your mammogram. And, you shouldn’t. This important screening test is often credited for the early and accurate detection of precancerous and cancerous breast cells, which, in many cases, are found in women who are otherwise healthy and have no symptoms. When diagnosed and addressed in its early stages, breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer. Therefore, it’s wise for a woman to be screened regularly in the manner and frequency recommended by her physician.

At Moffitt, we offer the latest breast cancer screening techniques, including:

  • Full-field digital mammography – Low-dose X-rays are used to create images of breast tissue, which are stored as electronic files rather than on traditional X-ray film. This provides a radiologist with the flexibility to change the image orientation, magnification, brightness and contrast when viewed on a computer screen.
  • Full-breast tomosynthesis – An X-ray machine moves around the breast to capture multiple pictures from different angles. A computer then compiles the resulting images into a detailed, three-dimensional graphic.

The team at Moffitt evaluates mammogram images using computer-aided detection, or CAD, to look for masses, calcification and areas of abnormal density, all of which may signal the presence of cancer. The CAD system highlights these areas on the images to indicate the need for further analysis, which may be accomplished with a diagnostic mammogram, breast ultrasound, MRI, fine-needle aspiration or biopsy.
