Laser ablation surgery may be recommended for treating a brain tumor that is located deep within the brain or spinal cord, which can potentially complicate a traditional surgical procedure. Moffitt Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center near St. Petersburg, Florida, offers a full spectrum of advanced brain tumor treatments, including Visualase® laser ablation surgery.
At Moffitt, we’re committed to providing the most extensive possible selection of treatments to patients with all types and stages of brain cancer. Visualase® is one specific therapy that is commonly recommended to individuals who are not candidates for conventional surgery due to:
- Complex positioning of a tumor
- Extensive metastatic spread throughout the brain or spinal cord
- Recurrent tumors that have not responded well to previous treatments
We are one of only a few cancer centers in the St. Petersburg area to offer Visualase® treatment, which works by heating abnormal cells until they are extensively damaged and unable to reproduce. It can also be used to destroy tissues that have been severely damaged by radiation therapy to the point that they are causing swelling, pain and other complications. Real-time MRI imaging allows our surgeons to see precisely where – and how much – laser energy is being administered, allowing them to continually adapt the procedure. As a result, we are able to achieve an extremely high level of surgical accuracy during our laser ablation procedures.
Referrals are not required for consultations with a Moffitt oncologist regarding laser ablation surgery for a brain tumor. To request an appointment with our team, call 1-888-663-3488 or submit a new patient registration form online. We welcome patients from St. Petersburg, FL, and many surrounding areas.
