Dr. Mooney Radiology Department

Diagnostic imaging is a critical part of the diagnostic process. Imaging scans allow oncologists to determine if cancer might be present, even if a tumor is still in its earliest stages. If a patient’s imaging results indicate something unusual, additional testing (such as a biopsy) can then be ordered.

If a patient is recommended to have further testing or imaging scans done after a virtual visit, rest assured Moffitt Cancer Center is committed to the health and safety of our patients, their families and our team members.

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we offer a variety of superior diagnostic imaging services at three convenient locations. From basic digital radiography to advanced modalities that can detect even the smallest abnormalities, we offer the latest technologies for tumor detection and staging. As a result, we have the ability to detect even the rarest cancers in their earliest stages, a key step in improving patient outcomes.

Our Diagnostic Imaging Program is equipped to provide the following diagnostic imaging procedures and all exams are performed by licensed technologists with advanced registration in their specialty:

Depending on the situation, two or more of these diagnostic imaging techniques may be performed at the same time. For instance, patients may receive PET/CT scans or SPECT/CT scans. A multispecialty team of oncologists, nurses, radiologists and technologists will assess each patient’s unique situation to determine the most appropriate options.

Our Diagnostic Imaging Program is an American College of Radiology (ACR) Accredited Facility with accreditations in Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound (US), and Positron Emission Tomography and Computerized Tomography (PET-CT). Our Breast Imaging Services is an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, and we are an ACR Accredited Lung Cancer Screening Site. Our subspecialized radiologists are board-certified by the American Board of Radiology or the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, and are also fellowship-trained in a specialty such as breast imaging, nuclear medicine, body imaging or interventional radiology. Our interventional radiologists specialize in using X-rays, CT scans and MRIs to perform minimally invasive treatments for a wide range of cancers.

Patients who are unable to travel to Moffitt for upcoming appointments should contact their healthcare team via the MyMoffitt Portal to determine if they are eligible for telemedicine, virtual care appointments and other options, and to determine the next steps for care.
