As I review Moffitt Cancer Center’s numerous accomplishments of the past year, the phrase “team science” comes to the forefront. Here, we all work as a team – scientists, physicians, staff members, donors, volunteers, members of our community and, most importantly, our patients and their loved ones. Our shared goals bring the benefits of scientific findings and the best treatments and support services to our patients and their families.

I hope you enjoy reading these annual report features, which highlight a few of Moffitt’s ongoing efforts to make a difference in the lives of patients with cancer.

One key improvement during 2013 was the expansion of our Cell Therapies Facility, which provides the resources to develop technology that brings cellular therapies, such as cell transplantation and antitumor vaccines, to the patient’s bedside.

This past year Moffitt was designated a Statutory Teaching Hospital by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, which is indicative of the cancer center’s investment in graduate medical education for our community and state. The designation is awarded to hospitals with 100 or more full-time equivalent resident physicians that are affiliated with an accredited medical school and that provide at least seven graduate medical education programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or the Council on Postdoctoral Training of the American Osteopathic Association.

Our culture underscores the value of collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork, and our inclusive and flexible structure supports faculty members from a variety of disciplines as they develop innovative ideas that move science and understanding forward. You will meet some of our newly recruited researchers, including Howard McLeod, Pharm.D., who joined Moffitt as Medical Director of the DeBartolo Family Personalized Medicine Institute. Dr. McLeod is Moffitt Cancer Center’s first state of Florida Cancer Research endowed chair, as established by the Florida Legislature.

A team of researchers and physicians are exploring innovative approaches to skin cancer treatment with the aim of bringing new laboratory discoveries to the patient through clinical trials. Some of these pioneering melanoma clinical trials at Moffitt are made possible by a newly awarded National Cancer Institute Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant for melanoma research. Moffitt is the only cancer center based in Florida that has received this prestigious grant.

Critical to our continued success is the involvement of our community. For example, the sponsors of the annual Miles For Moffitt event help ensure that 100 percent of race entry fees and individual donations go directly to support research programs at Moffitt. In this annual report you can meet some of the Miles For Moffitt research award recipients and learn more about their scientific work.

We simply could not advance the fight against cancer without the generosity of so many selfless individuals who give of their time, energy and financial resources. One such group of women in our community who are passionate about defeating women’s cancers teamed up to develop the Moffitt Merit Society®. Their members are partnering with Moffitt physicians, researchers and staff as they support and advocate for prevention, treatment, research and education related to cancers affecting women. You will learn about their work in supporting three of Moffitt’s female researchers by helping to fund their respective research projects.

Additionally, Moffitt is committed to reducing health disparities and working toward closing gaps in health care outcomes. We work as teams to identify the root causes of health disparities, whether they are socioeconomic or based on genetics and biology or poor health behaviors.  Read about several Moffitt research initiatives this past year that have yielded data that may help solve some of the issues related to health disparities.

As you read these and the other Annual Report articles you will see that Moffitt experienced growth on all fronts during the past year. My deep thanks to all of you for helping to make these advancements possible.
