Moffitt’s McKinley Campus Evolves, Expands

Clinical services will add to current research mission at nearby Moffitt satellite location.

Moffitt Cancer Center’s McKinley campus, located on North Malcolm McKinley Drive – a little less than a mile from Moffitt’s main campus at the University of South Florida – came to life in 2009 with the opening of M2Gen®, a wholly owned Moffitt subsidiary. Inside the M2Gen® building, surrounded by almost 30 undeveloped acres donated by Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa, researchers have been working to drive personalized cancer care to new levels by investigating tumor molecular and genetic markers.

Now, Moffitt is embarking on phase I of its expansion of the McKinley site, beginning with the construction of a $74.2 million, 200,000-square-foot, six-story outpatient facility slated to open in fall 2015.

“The new McKinley facility will include clinics, an ambulatory surgery center, infusion and imaging facilities, research dry labs and space for blood draws and associated laboratory tests,” says Dean Head, vice president, Facilities Management & Construction. “Approximately $54.2 million will be spent on the building and parking garage, and $20 million on new equipment.”

The clinics will include screening services moved from Moffitt Cancer Center Screening and Prevention’s location on Fowler Avenue. The four new ambulatory surgery suites will serve patients with breast cancer, melanoma, head and neck cancer, sarcoma and other cancers. Clinical space will include breast and cutaneous/melanoma clinics as well as associated imaging, all in an efficient outpatient environment.

Accompanying the medical services areas will be offices and administration facilities as well as dining areas.

Additionally, main campus upgrades will accompany the McKinley expansion, explains Head. Operating rooms will be renovated and expanded, as will clinic space and blood draw areas.
