The Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Department conducts methodological and collaborative research in the areas of biostatistics, computational research in bioinformatics and biomedical data management and integration. Research activities include consultation and quantitative research typically in collaboration with scientists across the basic, population and clinical sciences engaged in the planning, conduct, analysis, and interpretation of research. The statistical needs of cancer researchers encompass protocol design and data analysis for clinical trials as well as non-intervention studies in basic and population sciences. Biomedical Informatics needs focus on acquiring, structuring, analyzing and transforming biomedical data, including genomics, proteomics and clinical data, into information and knowledge that can be used by basic, clinical and translational researchers.
The department also provides educational programs for research and clinical faculty, postdocs and students. Many of the department faculty are also involved in the Cancer Center’s Biostatistics Core Facility and the Cancer Informatics Core Facility. The department is a key component of moving Moffitt toward realizing the vision of personalized and precision medicine through the development of biostatistical and computational methods to improve the efficiency of current and future diagnostic, therapeutic, prevention and intervention studies. The department is also integral to the development of computational tools for molecular diagnostics, prognostic predictions of cancer diseases and finding molecular signatures that match patients with new targeted therapies.
