Tissue Core

Where You Are:

Purpose

The Tissue Core is a central biospecimen repository at Moffitt Cancer Center specializing in protocol-driven human biospecimen collection, storage, processing and dissemination. The core provides investigators with access to high quality, well-annotated human biospecimens obtained from representatives of the patient population.

The advent of powerful molecular technologies has opened the door to developing more effective treatments of patients with cancer. Access to high quality biospecimens with associated clinical, treatment, recurrence and outcome data will be critical to developing and validating the tests needed for diagnosis and prediction of response to therapy.

Since its commencement in 1993, the Tissue Core has collected tens of thousands of cases of human liquid cancers and solid primary & metastatic tumors - both malignant and benign - often with adjacent normal, from a variety of sites and diagnoses. Collected biospecimens are usually remnant tissues obtained from patients undergoing therapeutic surgical procedures at the Center. The core ensures tissue release in compliance with the USF IRB and Privacy Board recommendations.

Sample Processing Lab
: The Tissue Core's Sample Processing Lab provides a wide variety of biospecimen processing services ranging from the processing of blood and bone marrow aspirates to extractions of nucleic acids. Additionally, this lab is responsible for the storage and release of biospecimens collected and stored within the biorepository.

  • General Bank Releases: Solid Biospecimens, Plasma, Serum, Urine, Mononuclear Cells, Bone Marrow Aspirates, Whole Blood & Nucleic Acid Aliquots
  • Nucleic Acid Extractions: Manual & Automated; Qiagen Manual Kits, Universal & AutoPure Systems
  • PI-Driven Biospecimen Processing: Plasma, Serum & Buffy Coat Isolation; Mononuclear Cell Isolation (Ficol or CPT tube)
  • Quality Control: Bioanalyzer RNA Quality Control; Tape Station Quality Control; Gel DNA Quality Control; Qubit Nucleic Acid Quantification (specific ds or ss nucleic acids)

Moffitt Prevention & Screening Lab: The Tissue Core's Moffitt Prevention & Screening Lab operates as a satellite facility at the Moffitt Prevention & Screening Center (formerly known as Lifetime Cancer Prevention & Screening Center) which is located less than one mile from the Moffitt on-campus Tissue Core. This section provides biospecimen acquisition, annotation, processing and temporary storage of biospecimens collected at this center. A major focus is collecting and processing biospecimens collected under the healthy at-risk control population general banking protocol.
