The Small Animal Imaging Lab (SAIL) Core Facility provides examination of rodent models for both basic and translational cancer research. SAIL provides specialized evaluation of tumor development, progression, metastasis, and response to therapy in mouse models of cancer using modern multimodality imaging, including bioluminescent and biofluorescent imaging, intravital confocal microscopy, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, and beta particle imaging. Additional modalities, such as positron emission tomography, computerized tomography, multispectral fluorescent tomography and multiphoton intravital fluorescence microscopy have recently been added to this core. These imaging modalities advance cancer research in mouse models by permitting longitudinal, noninvasive interrogation of tumor anatomy, physiology, metabolism, and gene expression. As the detection of tumors and their response to treatment may be measured using noninvasive imaging biomarkers, SAIL also is committed to developing and optimizing the most sensitive and specific imaging reagents and approaches for translation to the clinic.

Services of SAIL Core Facility include:

  • No cost pilot image data collection in support of grant submissions
  • Collaboration with the Analytical Microscopy Core facility to site intravital microscopy (IVM) in the imaging suite

SAIL provides training and access to instrumentation and assisted imaging for pilot studies. SAIL will develop and optimize a suite of tested protocols and standard procedures for:

  • Bioluminescence and biofluorescence imaging, BLI (Caliper IVIS-100 and IVIS-200)
  • Multispectral fluorescence in vivo tomography (Perkin-Elmer FMT 2500)
  • High-resolution phased array ultrasound imaging, US (VisualSonics Vevo 2100)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging, MRI (Varian 7T/30 ASR with full suite of multinuclear RF probes)
  • Oxford Hypersense Hyperpolarizer
  • Beta-particle imaging of window chambers in mice (SAIL developed system with 20 micron planar resolution)
  • Time Resolved Fluorescence Tomography (ART Optix MX3 )
  • Micro PET/SPECT/CT (Siemens Inveon)
