Dr. Schenk's research interests include health disparities, particularly among migrant farm workers, in oral and pharyngeal cancers with the goal of developing an interventional program designed to improve oral health and reduce the practice of risky behaviors. Another area of interest is the communication between terminally ill head and neck cancer patients and their surgeons with the goal of arriving at a clearer understanding of patients perceptions of their physicians' use of patient centered communication behaviors and patients' perceptions of their physicians' comfort and skill in talking about death and dying.
