Mission

The National Functional Genomics Center (NFGC) will validate the concept that molecular signatures in tumors predict cancer risk, diagnosis, prognosis, and response to therapy, as well as identify new molecular targets for the development of more effective cancer prevention and personalized therapeutic care.

"The NFGC is designed to bridge the gap between pure science and patient care by stimulating translational cancer research that will make a real difference in how we diagnose the disease and how we treat it."

W. Jackson Pledger, Ph.D.
Principal Investigator and Program Director, National Functional Genomics Center
Deputy Center Director, Executive Vice President of Basic Science Research, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute

History

The United States Congress recognized the need to bridge the gap between pure science and patient care and to provide translational research for the rapid development of new technologies in molecular or "personalized medicine" to significantly advance the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases, and established the National Functional Genomics Center (NFGC) in 2001 (Public Law 107-117). more...
