Dr. Richard Karl was the founding medical director of Moffitt Cancer Center and currently is a surgical oncologist and senior member of Moffitt Cancer Center’s Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology. He also serves as Moffitt’s physician safety officer.
Dr. Karl is the chairman emeritus and the Richard G. Connar professor of surgery at the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine. He serves as a member of the USF President’s advisory Group, USF Physician’s Group Executive Management Committee and other leadership positions.
A graduate of Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Karl completed a residency in surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO., where he was chief resident his last year.
Before coming to Tampa, Dr. Karl was an associate professor of surgery at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Karl has published nearly 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals and numerous book chapters. He is a member of many professional societies, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, Society of Surgical Chairman and the Society of Surgical Oncology. In addition, he is a governor-at large for the American College of Surgeons and a member of the program directors committee for the Society of Surgical Oncology.
His clinical and research interests include gastrointestinal malignancies with particular interest in hepatic, biliary tract and esophageal cancer.
