TAMPA, Fla. – Moffitt Cancer Center has earned a three-year cancer care certification by meeting standards set by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative Certification Program , which is an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
The certification helps Moffitt assess the quality of care provided to patients. To earn the recognition, Moffitt met core standards in treatment planning, staff training and education, chemotherapy safety, patient consent and education, and the monitoring of patient well-being.
“Going through the oncology society’s voluntary self-assessment helps Moffitt achieve its mission to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer while improving the overall patient experience,” said Karen Fields, M.D., medical director of strategic alliances. “It is important for our staff to hold ourselves accountable to rigorous, industry-accepted standards of care.”
Moffitt is the only hospital in the Tampa Bay area and one of nine hospitals in Florida who hold the certification.
“The initiative is designed by clinical experts in oncology to give practices the ability to continuously improve the quality of care they provide,” said ASCO President Clifford A. Hudis, M.D., FACP. “The certification program helps practices determine whether they are providing the best possible treatment and care to their patients and demonstrates their commitment to excellence and lifelong learning.”
The American Society of Clinical Oncology started the quality practice initiative in 2006, and the certification program launched in January 2010. Moffitt is one of 200 practices nationwide who have earned the certification, which is also supported by the Oncology Nursing Society.
