Moffitt Cancer Center is the Top-Ranked Cancer Hospital in the Southeast Based on U.S. News & World Report

Jul 15, 2014

US News and World Report 2014TAMPA, Fla. – Moffitt Cancer Center is one of the top-ranked cancer hospitals in the Southeast based on the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Cancer rankings released today. Moffitt is No. 16 overall in cancer, up from No. 19 last year. The national Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 25th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients — those whose illnesses pose unusual challenges due to underlying conditions, procedure difficulty, or other medical issues. Moffitt, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, has been recognized by U.S. News for 16 years in a row.

“Moffitt is honored to be acknowledged by U.S. News as one of the top cancer hospitals in the nation and the top-ranked cancer hospital in the Southeast,” said Alan F. List, M.D., president and CEO of Moffitt. “When it comes to serious and complex cancer cases, Moffitt rises to the top in providing the highest quality patient care and outcomes that beat the national average. This is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our clinical and research staff who support our focus on personalized cancer care and cutting-edge translational research.”

U.S. News also recognizes Moffitt as high performing in Ear, Nose & Throat; Gastroenterology & GI Surgery; Gynecology; Nephrology; and Urology.

U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties. In most specialties, it ranks the nation’s top 50 hospitals and recognizes other high-performing hospitals that provide care at nearly the level of their nationally ranked peers.

“The data tell the story – a hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings editor. “Just 3 percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed earned a national ranking in even one specialty.

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.

The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.

A complete list of rankings is available online and will appear in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals 2015” guidebook, available in August.
