Moffitt Cancer Center Names Peter Kanetsky Chair, Program Leader of Cancer Epidemiology

Jan 08, 2014

TAMPA, Fla.    Peter Kanetsky, Ph.D., M.P.H. has joined Moffitt Cancer Center as the chair and program leader of Cancer Epidemiology. The Cancer Epidemiology Program contributes to reducing cases of cancer by gaining better knowledge of the causes of the disease and translating that knowledge into effective, early detection and prevention.

“Dr. Kanetsky is an outstanding scientist whose work focuses on the distinct needs of our population in Florida.  We are delighted to have him join our team,” said Paul Jacobsen, Ph.D., associate center director for Population Science at Moffitt.

In addition to leading the Cancer Epidemiology Department and Program, Kanetsky will continue his research focusing on the complex effects of genetic and environmental exposures across the cancer continuum in melanoma and testicular cancers. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed research articles, in some of the leading medical journals in his field.

Prior to joining Moffitt, Kanetsky was an associate professor of Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He was also a senior scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and a member of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

Kanetsky obtained his Ph.D. in Epidemiology at Columbia University. He is a member of the executive committee of the American Society of Preventive Oncology; the governing council for GenoMEL, an international Melanoma Genetics Consortium; and TECAC, an international testicular cancer consortium.
